Monday, Nov. 30

ARTCELERATION Featuring RETNA: Getting a jump start on the Baseline, New York’s Hoerle-Guggenheim gallery is hosting a live painting event by graffiti artist to the stars, RETNA, who may or may not have been doing performance art when he trashed an LA art gallery recently, and who will hopefully not smash the Ferrari F430 Challenge he plans to paint. The event is by invitation only and will take place at Macaya Gallery, 145 NW 36th St. 

Design District Tour: A private tour of the DD’s swanky new stores and a sneak peek of the area’s most anticipated art exhibitions led by the DD’s Don Corleone, Craig Robins and L Real Estate’s Mathieu Le Bozec at 3:30 p.m. The tour ends in the Palm Court Events Space with remarks by Robins, curator Jeffrey Deitch, Hermes USA CEO Robert Chavez and architect and Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Mohsen Mostafavi. 

Tuesday, Dec. 1

Galerie Gmurzynska/Sylvester Stallone at ex Versace mansion: Long before Basel was anything but a city in Switzerland to Miami folk, Sly Stallone was doing art. Making art. Painting. We remember his house parties in Miami celebrating such. Sly was a visionary and is back in town for Art Basel and a private party at 8:30 p.m. that he will co host with art curator and critic Germano Celant. 

Reception for Magnificent Jewels & Sotheby’s Diamonds: Invite only 1 percentfest at the Sotheby’s penthouse from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Soho House Kick-Off Party hosted with White Cube & Vinyl Factory: An invite only ‘do hosted by Soho House’s Nick Jones, London art gallery White Cube’s Jay Jopling and indie British music and arts enterprise The Vinyl Factory. Disco legend Giorgio Moroder will spin while Moet & Chandon and Bombay will keep the crowds (de)hydrated. Also happening at Soho is the Calypso St. Barth boutique, open to members and guests December 3-6 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Sunday, where you never know who may be in the market for a caftan or ten.

Opening Reception for Unrealism: Art world machers Larry Gagosian and Jeffrey Deitch have organized this exhibition which will kick off its opening with a private party at 5 p.m. in the Moore Building.

Jose Andres Pre-Art Basel Cocktail with Africa Aycart: Spanish chef Andres welcomes Spanish artist Aycart at this invite only cocktail party at The Bazaar from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Icons by Pamela Hanson: Celebrating her latest photo exhibition of limited edition prints to benefit World Housing, fashion and celeb snapper Hanson is having a private cocktail party at 6:30 p.m. at the Shore Club. Her exhibition features Naomi Campbell, Nadja Auerman, William Baldwin, Kate Moss, Carla Bruni, Helena Christensen, Eva Herzigova and Michaela Bercu, so you never know whom of the aforementioned may show up. 

DuJour Magazine Party: Delano Beach Club. Private. 10 p.m.

PK SHOP Inaugural Cocktail: Paul Kasmin Gallery’s PK SHOP, called #TheNightYouLeft is emerging at The Nautilus and celebrating with a cocktail party, by invite only, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. This time around, the shop will feature wearable and collectable art by Deborah Kass, Erik Parker, John Gordon Gauld, Nir Hod, Mark Ryden and Will Ryman, among others.

Design Dialogue at the W South Beach: A moderated talk between fashion and art hosted by, wait for it, Heat player Amar’e Stoudemire and art collector Robbie Antonio moderated by Surface Magazine editor in chief Spencer Bailey. 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Private.

Brickell City Centre’s Illuminate the Night VIP Unveiling: The behemoth Brickell City Centre is taking one block of its 9.1 acre construction site and turning it into “an incredible deconstructed event space” featuring a performance by Wooden Wisdom, the duo comprised of actor Elijah Wood and former record label dude turned DJ Zach Cowie.  Invited guests will witness the first-time illumination of the newly completed Brickell City Centre CLIMATE RIBBON™, “imagined” by famed designer, Hugh Dutton and get to take selfies in front of British pop artist Allen Jones’s 23-foot, 6-ton sculpture “Dancers,” on display for one day only over Art Basel.

Hillary Clinton Fundraiser: Timing is everything, and the Democratic presidential hopeful will be in town for some private fundraisers including one at 5:30 p.m. at a Miami Beach apartment building to which supporters can attend for $2,700 including small talk and a photo op, or  $1,000 just to breathe the same air. Elle Decor Modern Life Concept House opening 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Wynwood. By invite (not even a plus one) only and featuring interior designers Sam Robin, Danielle Busca, Matt Macdonald, Elizabeth Martin and Fernando Wong.

The Art of Shade: Some would say this is the quintessential title for all of Art Basel Miami Beach, but then again, TUUCI, a Miami-based outdoor shade manufacturer, is hosting its own event from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at MAPS backlot, 342 NW 24th St., featuring graffiti artists Ricky Mastrapa AKA Abstrkt, Alex Vahan AKA Quake and Luis Berros using TUUCI parasols as canvases. Food and drink too. 

Mark Anthony Green Welcome Reception at Dream South Beach: Invite only party at 9 p.m. for GQ editor turned artist Green who will debut an installation described as his “most raw, most envelope pushing exhibition by far.”

Wynwood Walls VIP Party: Following a private hootenanny from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., Wynwood Walls opens to the public with a bash from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. with a litany of artists including Alexis Diaz, Case, Crash, Cryptik, el Seed, Ernest Zacharevic, Fafi, Hueman, Logan Hicks, The London Police, Magnus Sodamin and Pichi & Avo. 2520 NW 2nd Ave.

Palmeiras Beach Club at Grove Isle opening: Debuting the newly revamped hotel, restaurant, bar, beach club and spa, Palmeiras is hosting a VIP only Soiree Blanche (white) party with exhibitions by Venezuelan artists Flor Troconis and Rafael Barrios.

Architectural Digest Art at 1 Hotel: Private party with AD ed-in-chief Margaret Russell, 1 Hotels founder Barry Sternlicht, and LeFrak CEO and namesake Richard LeFrak celebrating art by Hilary Harnischfeger, Robert Lazzarini, Philippe Malouin, Michele Oka Doner and Carlos Rolon/Dzine.  6 p.m.

Art Basel CELEBS Start The Party Early!

By Jose Lambiet, GossipExtra.com, for SouthFloridaReporter.com, Nov. 29, 2015 – MIAMI BEACH — It’s that time of year: The art world and a bustle of celebrities are set to descend on our southern shores for the uber in-crowd love-fest Art Basel.

But this time around, the biggest celebrities can’t even wait for the actual event, which runs Dec. 3 to Dec. 6.

They’re starting their parties early.

Maybe they should rename it pARTy Basel?

Unless you’re a super cool kid, you may not be able to get into most of these parties.

But then Art Basel is actually supposed to be about the art, now isn’t it?

On Tuesday, before Art Basel even opens, actress Hilary Swank (Boys Don’t Cry, Million Dollar Baby) is scheduled to host a private party with famed celeb photographer Bruce Weber at the Delano hotel for DuJourMagazine.

Sylvester Stallone will be hosting a a party at the former Versace Mansion on the same night.

And Miami Heat star Amar’e Stoudemire will be leading a talk on fashion and art along with art collector Robbie Antonio at the W South Beach.

Then Wednesday, Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody will be showing off his own paintings in show called “Hot Dogs, Hamburgers and Handguns” at Lulu Laboratorium.

On Basel’s opening day, Dec. 3, Eva Longoria will co-host the launch of Ricardo Barroso Interiors at Casa Tua.

Alicia Keys will be performing at her husband Swizz Beatz‘s three-day Untameable Houseparty.

And Friday, actress Katie Holmes (Batman Begins, Woman in Gold) will host Ocean Drive‘s Art of the Party at A-Rod‘s old Miami Beach estate.

Later in the week DMX and Wiz Khalifa will also lend their talents to South Beach.

Russell Simmons will be hosting the 6th Annual Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series Finale Party along withDanny Simmons and Rosario Dawson at the Nautilus Hotel. Ciara, TK Wonder and Cipriana Quann are supposed to be there.

And Paris Hilton will do her annual stint at Wall nightclub.

Because nothing says art like Paris Hilton!

Celebrities will flock to Miami to rub elbows with the art elite during Art Basel, which runs Thursday through Sunday. But many over-the-top parties will take place even before the art fair officially begins.

On Tuesday, Hilary Swank and Adrien Brody will help DuJour magazine kick things off with a party hosted by photographer Bruce Weber and his companion/agent Nan Bush at the Delano. Surface will host a panel with Miami Heat star Amar’e Stoudemire and real estate developer Robbie Antonio at W South Beach. And Sylvester Stallone will help Galerie Gmurzynska open a showcase curated by Germano Celant with cocktails at the former Versace Mansion.

Later in the week, Eva Longoria and Ricky Martin will honor Related Group’s Jorge Pérez at a Global Gift Initiative event and Paris Hilton will do her annual DJ thing at the nightclub Wall.

Fashion types will also party with Moschino designer Jeremy Scott during Montauk hotel The Surf Lodge’s pop-up at The Hall South Beach. A$AP Rocky will play the III Points concert series and New York clubs popping up will include 1Oak, Bounce Sporting Club and No. 8.

Design Miami 2015 preview: the top 15 exhibits and satellite events

Next week, the world’s design and art communities will embark upon their annual five-day sojourn to Florida’s balmy climes to attend Design Miami (2 – 6 December). Now in its 11th year and bolstered by the city’s rapidly developing Design District, this year’s edition promises to be the most diverse to date. Among the week’s obligatory poolside parties and soirées, works by established and emerging designers from galleries across five continents will tempt buyers while a packed programme of installations, retail-driven projects, happenings and talks looks set to delight. ‘Terra Continens’ table by Karen Chekerdjian

Dedicated to internationalising Middle Eastern contemporary design since opening in 2010, the Beirut-based Carwan Gallery has been a key figure in promoting cross-cultural collaborations. Its Miami efforts focuses on one designer, Karen Chekerdjian, a pioneering design force who founded her design studio in Beirut more than 12 years ago. Presented for the first time on this side of the Atlantic, the works on view represent the best of Chekerdjian’s career and highlights her ability to experiment with unexpected materials.

As we first reported in our December issue (W*201), Design Miami tasked a student team from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (GSD) to devise its entry pavilion, marking the first time the fair has collaborated with an educational institution in such a significant way. The students, who are currently in their second year at GSD, tapped into the collective catalogue of unrealised projects from their peers to create Unbuilt, a canopy of hand-milled, pink foam models, which will be accompanied by an app for easy identification so as to ensure that each project and designer has its day.

Espasso and Arte Club Jacarandá
Flying the flag for Brazil’s plentiful creative contributions is a special exhibition of the country’s art and design offerings curated by Espasso and the Rio de Janiero-based collective Arte Club Jacarandá. With highlights including paintings by the iconic artist Carlos Vergara and the equally celebrated Carlito Carvalhosa, and furniture by Zanini de Zanine, Sergio Rodrigues and Claudia Moreira Salles, the exhibition paints a holistic portrait of Brazil’s collectible art and design scene. To top it off, the exhibition will be staged in the penthouse of the Shore Club hotel, which will officially be part of the Fasano family when it reopens in 2017.

‘Model Art Pavilion’ by Gluckman Tang

Revolution Pre-Crafted Properties
Taking collectible design to the next level is Revolution Pre-Crafted Properties, a limited edition collection of prefabricated living spaces (pavilions and homes included), brought to you by gallerist/collector Edward Tyler Nahem and real estate developer/collector Robbie Antonio. Conceived by Antonio, the project will feature contributions by more than 30 leading architects, designers and artists. The series launches in Miami with fully realised constructions of Zaha Hadid’s VOLU Pavilion and Gluckman Tang’s Model Art Pavilion.

LAX – MIA: Light + Space
Amongst the numerous Art Deco hotels currently being rejuvenated in Miami is The Surf Club, located in Miami Beach. Soon to be reopened with a new Richard Meier design and operated by The Four Seasons, the property in collaboration with Fort Partners will host ‘LAX – MIA: Light + Space’, an art exhibition curated by Parallel, comprising architecture curator Terence Riley, architect John Keenen and art historian Joachim Pissarro. Focusing on Los Angeles’ Light and Space art movement of the 1970s and featuring works by DeWain Valentine, Larry Bell and Helen Pashgian, the exhibition will show how the movement’s ethos and aesthetics reflect the ideology behind Meier’s concept for the redesigned hotel.

We’d jump at any chance to step into the colourful, irony-soaked world of Toiletpaper, the provocative art publication from Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari. The visual maestros will takeover the lounge at the Untitled art fair with new carpets from the Seletti Wears Toiletpaper collection, which makes its debut in Miami. The space will also be dressed with the brand’s iconic furniture produced by Gufram.

‘Self Portrait’ by Andy Warhol

Granted that most of the art collecting does take place at the numerous fairs that sprout up in South Beach, a visit to the Delano Hotel is definitely in order, especially if you are an Andy Warhol fan. Thanks to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Design Store, the Andy Warhol Foundation has teamed up with The Skateroom – a collective that invites contemporary artists to create art on skateboards – on a limited edition collection of skate decks. Installed throughout the legendary hotel, there will be boards featuring 32 varieties of Campell’s soup cans, as well as triptychs with Gold Marilyn Monroe, Guns, Car Crash, Self Portrait and Detail of the Last Supper. Each will be available for purchase in limited quantities.

Design Miami’s identity has been conceived by illustrator Pierre Le-Tan this year

While we’d all like to leave Miami with a work of art or a piece of collectible design, sometimes it’s just not the case. This year, however, worthy souvenirs come in the form of a collection of Design Miami merchandise featuring illustrations by Pierre Le-Tan. Depicting a range of Miami-related motifs, such as palm tress, Art Deco architecture and key lime pies in Le-Tan’s playful style, the offbeat range includes socks, umbrellas, scarves and bow ties. With offerings for both men and women, the 11-piece limited edition collection will be available at the fair’s new Market.

Inspired by the sky’s degradé hues, New York design studio Snarkitecture will transform the exterior of one of Netjets’ signature private planes

Netjets and Snarkitecture
The official partner of Art Basel for the last 14 years, Netjets is the only way we would fly to Miami if the choice were up to us. This year, the private jet company has recruited Snarkitecture to create an installation that will put its Signature Series Global 5000 aircraft in the spotlight. Staged at the Landmark Aviation private jet terminal in Miami International Airport, Snarkitecture will reimagine the jet’s exterior as a sight pilots flying at dawn or dusk usually experience: an ombré-tinted sky.

Artsy and Sixty Hotels
We first waxed lyrical about Sixty Hotels’ newest addition, Nautilus, fresh after it was given the Jason Pomeranc treatment. Now, the hotel group has teamed up with Artsy for a week’s worth of programming, ranging from performances and installations to a designer popsicle truck, naturally. Food aside, Artsy has commissioned the artist Katherine Bernhardt to create an original pool painting for the hotel, thus continuing a tradition of which David Hockney, Keith Haring and Pablo Picasso have all contributed to.

Swarovski
The Mexican architect Fernando Romero is the driving force behind El Sol, a statuesque geodesic structure composed of 2,880 custom-made Swarovksi crystals that will take over the company’s booth at Design Miami. Designed at a scale of one billion times smaller than the sun, the sculpture mimics the sacred geometry that the ancient Aztec and Mayan civilisations used to construct their pyramids, which were conceived to observe the skies – with the added benefit of modern technology, of course. The installation is made up of an intricate puzzle of precision-cut crystals, each individually coated in Swarovski’s Aurora Borealis coating. Lit from within, it will evoke the sun’s pulsating force to an inspiring degree.

‘Fragments’ dining table by Lex Pott for The Future Perfect

The Future Perfect, Lex Pott and Calico Wallpaper
A longtime stalwart of the New York design scene, retail platform The Future Perfect makes its debut at Design Miami this year with an immersive installation that showcases the work of the Dutch designer Lex Pott and Brooklyn-based Calico Wallpaper. The environment will present newly commissioned stone furniture by Pott against handpainted gradient wall coverings from Calico made using pulverised minerals and stones. The backdrops will also be painted live onsite, bringing a performance aspect to the exhibition.

White Cube
Leave it to White Cube to veer off-piste, taking its Miami presence to a satellite venue for the first time. In addition to its booth at Art Basel Miami Beach, the international gallery pitches up in the Melin Building with a bewitching installation by the artist Larry Bell, a leading exponent of California’s Light and Space movement. 6×6 An Improvisation was first exhibited at The Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas from 2014-2015 and is made up of 30 glass panels that respond to changing light conditions at different times of day. The glass, which has been treated with a nickel-chrome finish, produces an effect that’s both dramatic and visually complex.

Fendi
Moving house is always a good opportunity to clear out the rafters. In Fendi’s case, its recent relocation to new headquarters in Rome’s historic business district at the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana – otherwise known as Square Colosseum – revealed a series of unrealised furniture designs envisioned by architect Guglielmo Ulrich for the district. Under Fendi’s watch, Ulrich’s designs for an S-shaped sofa, gold-capped lampshades and a rosewood table among others, have been beautifully brought back to life – almost 70 years after they were first conceived.

House of Voltaire
The London-based art charity Studio Voltaire brings its beloved pop-up retail concept House of Voltaire to the beaches of Miami this year. Armed with a new collection of specially commissioned homeware, accessories and clothing, House of Voltaire will move into a temporary home at New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) Miami Beach. Visitors can procure tea towels by Peter Saville; lambs wool blankets by the artists Marc Camille Chaimowicz and Ella Kruglyanskaya; and ceramics by the fashion designer Roksanda Ilincic. They will also be able to peruse other sought after projects, such as a limited edition silk top by Ilincic and Eva Rothschild and a photographic collaboration between Simone Rocha and Kim Gordon.
