Zaha Hadid Unveils Volu, Dining Pavilion at Design Miami

by Arqa Network

The architects Zaha Hadid and Patrik Schumacher have designed a dining pavilion in the shape of an open clam shell.

Hadid and Schumacher’s team used computer design to create the pavilion, which is constructed from laser-cut perforated surfaces of steel, with aluminum box sections and wooden ties.

“ Defined by digital processes, the pavilion has been developed in such a way that its components are separate curves ,” said the London-based studio.

Volu appears to be made of one continuous piece, and features an oval roof that slopes down over diners like a mushroom cap. The 3.2-meter-tall skeleton structure is cut into irregularly shaped sections that form a pattern across the roof and supporting stem.

The pattern is repeated on the floor of the 20-square-meter pavilion, although the gaps have been filled in with wooden planks.

” Composed of a series of structural bands that pick up in the spine and in expansion above, the pavilion pattern is guided by varying structural loading conditions ,” the studio said in a statement.

“ Through analysis of the geometry under load, the structure and skin of the canopy have been digitally optimized to remove unnecessary material, resulting in the lightest possible design solution – following an organic structural logic that recreates many of the the same principles found in nature.

The structure houses a circular wooden dining table, accompanied by three curved benches that can accommodate up to ten people.

The piece has been commissioned by property developer Antonio Robbie for his Revolution project, which invites international architects and designers to create prefabricated living spaces.

Modern design pavilion by Zaha Hadid

by Claire Deschamps, Design Magazine

The small  design pavilion  that we make you discover with this publication is part of a project launched by Zaha Hadid and presented at Miami Art Week 2015. It consists of the manufacture of a series of prefabricated constructions of this type, including habitable houses. The project, entitled Revolution, is designed with the collaboration of the specialist in the field of the real estate market Robbie Antonio and in collaboration with more than 30 architects, designers and artists recognized throughout the world. His goal is to create a series of living spaces that are inspired by high technology but with an affordable cost.

The modern-style pavilion created by Zaha Hadid’s team of architects is named “Volu” and it is a construction that contributes to the work of the creative platform by providing a dining area. The building is characterized by its remarkable silhouette, by its original forms and by its light construction, which is typical for the  modular structures of modern style.

The pavilion was developed using complex digital technology in order to be able to support its own weight while having a rather original shape. In fact, this technology has been based on a detailed analysis that has freed the structure of all the elements of the construction that are not essential for it to be durable enough. The result is striking: a modern and unusual building that echoes the shapes found in our natural environment. Here are the rest of the images of this small structure, made by Zaha Hadid as part of Revolt:

The Century Spire

By Aussy A. Aportadera, Tatler Asia

A powerhouse team, made up of the world-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind and the luxury interior design studio Armani/Casa, embark on an ambitious venture with Century Properties.

Visit the showroom at Pacific Star Building

The light of the afternoon sun revealed an unobstructed view of the Makati skyline from the fifth floor of the Century City Mall. The event hall brimmed with anticipation as the ambassador Joey Antonio took to the stage. Launching Century Properties Group, Inc.’s (CPGI) latest project, Antonio shared an invaluable message from the recent World Economic Forum held in Manila: “The Philippines has been identified as the Tiger of Asia.”

“Here we are,” continued the founder of CPGI, “Celebrating the groundbreaking of an iconic building that will be forming the skyline in the Philippines.” The Century Spire will stand in 2018, a functional sculpture from Studio Daniel Libeskind – the architectural maven behind the Jewish Museum in Berlin and Ground Zero in New York, among others. The 60-storey tower takes on a distinct design, blossoming at the top of the building like a flower, crystalising residential and office spaces in geometric shapes. The venture marks the last of eight towers by CPGI in Makati city.

The architect Daniel Libeskind himself was in Manila to share in this milestone, even expressing his observation of the city as an example of the global competition of growth. “What makes a great city is what I saw today,” he said, “I went to shake hands with young architects from the schools in the Philippines. You could see their bright eyes, their ambition. The fact that the world is opening up to create something more than just buildings.”

The interiors of Century Spire bring the unprecedented collaboration of another renowned firm, Armani/Casa. Under the artistic direction of Giorgio Armani, Century Spire will be the studio’s first project in the Philippines. The common areas like the grand lobby, library, swimming pool, and fitness areas are among the sections of the tower that Armani/Casa will design. The 500 residential units also have upgrade options to integrate furnished luxury amenities such as the Armani/Dada kitchen line and the Armani/Roca bathroom line.

For inquiries, visit the fully-furnished and designed show flats located at 4/F Pacific Star Building, Sen. Gil Puyat cor. Makati Avenue, Makati City. Appointment is required.
