MANILA – The creator of Lady Gaga’s shoes, which found instant fans in other celebrities like Nicki Minaj and Kim Kardashian among others, is looking to expand its footprint in a fast-growing, trendy Asian market, according to Rem D Koolhaas, founder and creative director of global footwear brand United Nude.
Koolhaas, who described his brainchild as an “affordable design company” and whose products are “exclusive by design, and not by price,” is on his second visit to the Philippines, following UN’s flagship opening at Resorts World Manila in Dec. 2018.
There are also talks of opening more stores in the horizon, but Koolhaas was quick to add that there was no need to rush into the fresh market.

“One of the reasons I think that we are popular in Southeast Asia is because there have been a lot of economic growth over the past decade. And therefore, there’s a lot of interest and newness, and there’s not so much retrospect in a new market like that,” said Koolhaas in an exclusive chat with ANC’s “The Boss.”
Unlike its European counterpart, which Koolhas has described as “conservative” and “casual” citing the influence of established heritage brands, Asia, he said, has a higher interest in fashion, taking note of the women who tend to dress up “a little bit more.”
The California-based Dutch native also revealed plans to venture beyond fashion and into hospitality like United Nude Hotel or into property with Filipino real estate billionaire Robbie Antonio of Revolution Precrafted, the Philippines’ first Unicorn startup.
“We’re always interested to find a collaborator, but we also get a lot of requests for collaboration,” said Koolhaas.
Among United Nude’s current collaborations include Lady Gaga’s choreographer Richard “Richy” Jackson, and African-American Shaun Ross, the world’s first albino male model.

BILLBOARD HOME
The idea was to make a house and studio complex for an artist (himself) and his family. The views are relatively unobstructed, and the house is designed to bring as much of the view inside as possible. The structure is intended to support a life both active and contemplative: reading, writing, painting, outdoor activities, socializing all have designated area.
In addition, they wanted to dedicate entire exterior walls to the “function” of pure image: images drawn from a “palette” of painting fragments can be digitally printed on the metal cladding of the two solid end walls, creating startling imagistic interventions in the otherwise predominantly horizontal landscape. The house is an image in the landscape; an image inside of an image, like a small painting inset into a larger one. The design concept began by looking at a modular element that fits inside of shipping containers, that can also be combined to create pleasingly proportioned living spaces.
MARMOL RADZINER | KRAVITZ DESIGN
Kravitz Design, Inc. (KDI) was founded by Renaissance man and legendary music icon Lenny Kravitz, and touts a portfolio of noteworthy ventures.
Collaborating with Marmol Radziner, who creates projects that engage the surrounding environment and take a warm, textured approach to modernism that is elegant and timeless, has given birth to a sexy, sinewy design, that is as iconic as its proponents.
INSTRUMENTAL HOME
The Instrumental Home is a free-standing enclosure that includes a living area, kitchen, one bedroom and one bathroom. The interior space maintains a constant connection with the outdoors by the use of full height glazing. The kitchen and living area and bedroom open up to large exterior decks, facilitating a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience. The exterior trellis provides a delicate cover for the decks while filtering light into the interior spaces. Like the spaces themselves, the materials are an elegant palette of metal panels, wood flooring and aluminum doors and windows. New York City-based design firm Kravitz Design, Inc. conceived the Instrumental Home’s interiors with the goal of creating an efficient, indoor/outdoor living space.
Jakarta-based transportation technology startup Go-Jek encountered a major roadblock in their bid for regional domination recently when a Filipino government agency denied the Indonesian unicorn entry into its country’s market for violating laws on foreign ownership. But an Indonesian minister has offered a unique deal to resolve the issue that some are calling a “unicorn swap”.
Indonesia’s minister of communication and information technology, Rudiantara, has taken up Go-Jek’s cause and is lobbying the Philippines to relax their rules for Go-Jek — the reason being that Go-Jek’s presence in other countries will indirectly contribute to Indonesian foreign exchange.
At a seminar called ‘Outlook 2019’ on Tuesday, Rudiantara suggested that a Filipino unicorn could be given entry into the Indonesian market if Go-Jek was given a green light in the Philippines.
“There’s only one requirement, that Go-Jek be allowed into Manila, Philippines,” he said as quoted by Katadata.
“I told them we need to build millions of houses in the country, why don’t you come to Indonesia soon, I will facilitate,” Rudiantara said, although he did not offer more concrete details on what sort of assistance he had offered.
No go for Go-Jek yet
The Philippines’ Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) denied Go-Jek entry into the country’s market because its local subsidiary Velox Technology Philippines violates laws on foreign ownership in public utility franchises, Rappler reported.
The no-go came from the LTFRB’s pre-accreditation committee, the first level a Transport Network Company like Go-Jek must pass through to get accredited.
According to Delgra, Velox Technology Philippines “did not meet the citizenship requirement and the application was not verified in accordance with our rules.”
Section 11 Article XII of the Philippine Constitution states that at least 60 percent of a public utility’s capital must come from Filipino citizens.
Rappler reported that Velox Technology Philippines’ article of incorporation states that it is 99.99 percent owned by its parent company Velox South-East Asia Holdings, a company based in Singapore.
Go-Jek has not published a statement on the LTFRB’s decision but told TechCrunch that they had not given up on their plans to expand to the Philippines.
“We continue to engage positively with the LTFRB and other government agencies, as we seek to provide a much-needed transport solution for the people of the Philippines,” a representative told the website.

To date, he has worked with 13 Pritzker Prize Architects/firms such as Zaha Hadid, Philip Johnson Alan Ritchie architects, Rem Koolhaas, Jean Nouvel, I.M. Pei, Paulo Mendes da Rocha, and Christian de Portzamparc, as well as designers such as Ron Arad, Campana Brothers, Tom Dixon, Philippe Starck, and Marcel Wanders. He has worked with over 103 notable brands in various fields—including fashion, Hollywood, luxury, design, and art. Robbie has established the largest number of luxury branded real estate developments across the globe, by working with Giorgio Armani for Armani Casa, Versace Home, Missoni Home, Paris Hilton, Lenny Kravitz and Wallpaper Magazine. He also became the youngest person to be included in the Forbes Philippines 50 Richest List in 2017 and 2018.
He is one of the youngest and most prolific collectors of international modern and post-war contemporary art in the world. Because of his accomplishments as an art collector, he has received a number of awards from many different organizations. In 2014, Artnet recognized him as one of “20 of the World’s Most Innovative Art Collectors”, while in 2015, he became the part of Artnet’s “Top 200 Art Collectors Worldwide”. Artnet also recognized him with two awards in 2016: as one of twelve young art collectors to watch out for, as well as one of the top 100 art collectors for that year. In May 2018, he was named “Real Estate Personality of the Year” by PropertyGuru.
His passion for art has also led him to collaborate with artists such as Marina Abramovich, Maurizio Catellan, Francesco Clemente, Damien Hirst, Zhang Huan, David La Chapelle, Marilyn Minter, Takashi Murakami, Julian Opie, and Julian Schnabel.

Revolution Precrafted is currently offering eight product lines but there is so much potential when it comes to branded prefab structures. The company is looking into branded medical facilities, schools and offices along with the new technologies that would enable it to build vertical structures above the usual 4-5 storeys. Revolution Precrafted is looking at opening offices in United Arab Emirates, France, USA, and Brazil among others.
